Featured book: The Cost of Free Land by Rebecca Clarren

An award winning author investigates the entangled history of her Jewish ancestor's land in South Dakota and the Lakota who were forced off that land by the United States government.  Persecuted Jews immigrated to the United States at the turn of the century fleeing the PomGroms Russia.  The 1860 Homestead Act offered 160 acres of "free" land to settlers. Immigrants arrived in South Dakota

to live on the "free land" only to realize that they were displacing indigenous natives from their home where they had lived for  centuries. The extensive research done by the author is amazing and unveils history not written in U.S. history books. The author gets the reader to consider how we as present day Americans might have benefitted from these broken treaties and misplaced lives. Rather than reparations.. she poses.. What would healing look like now?
